Grade 12 Vanier student Grace Waldenberger was named a runner-up for the Saskatchewan Agriculture Scholarship.

The grand prize winner received a $4,000 scholarship, while the runners-up received $2,000 scholarships.

The grand prize winner was Emily Sebastian of Montmartre, while Waldenberger, Kristy Pedersen of Lockwood and Kate Axten from Minton were runners-up.

“My first initial thought was ‘wow, I can't believe I got this.’ It's one of those big ones from the Ministry of Agriculture. I was kind of surprised but very honoured that I got it,” Waldenberger said, describing her reaction to winning the scholarship.

Waldenberger plans to attend the University of Saskatchewan next year to take the Bachelor of Science Agri-Business course. Agriculture has been an interest of her’s from a young age as she lives on a fourth-generation grain farm north of Moose Jaw near the Village of Marquis.

As part of the application process, those interested in the scholarship had to either make a video or write an essay about transparency in agriculture. Waldenberger decided to write an essay.

“I talked about how producers can improve transparency and how we can be more open to the consumers with their questions and their curiosity and ways that we can do that better,” she said.

After the winning submissions were announced, the winners were invited to the legislative building on May 10 to be recognized for winning the scholarships.

“We got a tour of the legislative building. We had a nice luncheon with our MLAs and we also got to actually sit in on a question period,” Grace said.

“So, that was super neat to experience just seeing those avenues that are available to people after high school and even for me, going into agriculture, I got to see the different areas that agriculture even plays in an industry like politics.”
