Moose Jaw City Council is looking at a tax increase after learning the Operating Budget is short nearly half a million dollars.

We'll need to dig a little deeper when it comes time to pay property taxes this year if nothing changes.

Moose Jaw is facing a 475 thousand-dollar shortfall in the 2007 Operating Budget and that translates into a 3.45 per cent tax increase.

Councilor Dawn Luhning says that number could go up depending on what happens with the multiplex. "If this council decides not to use the Major Projects Fund it could be a potential increase of 7.5 per cent just to find the new multiplex. In that regard when you take 7.5 percent and 3.45 percent you're looking at an increase in the city in one year of over 10 percent."

But nothing is written in stone just yet, budget deliberations are just getting underway.
