The end of the season for Moose Jaw's Chantz Petruic was always going to be the end of his junior hockey career.

The Yorkton Terriers' captain and leading scorer didn't want it to end the way it did, with the season called on a global pandemic. Petruic talked with his teammates about finding out the season was over.

“Obviously we were upset and had to fight back a few tears for sure,” said Petruic. “It’s just one of those things. We can’t really do anything about it right now. I just hope all of this stuff goes smoothly so everyone can go back to normal and play hockey one day. It sucks, and it’s not really the way I wanted to end it off.”

Petruic lead the SJHL in goals with 58 and points with 109 in the regular season. Those were the highest totals in several years in the league.

Petruic’s Yorkton Terriers and the La Ronge Ice Wolves were tied at 2-2 in their SJHL playoff series when Hockey Canada called the season.

“It’s kind of just in that state of shock now, just like every other guy right now,” he said. “Life is a little bit more important than hockey sometimes. We’ve got to take the precautionary factor into this. You can’t go against what they’re saying. It’s frustrating, not really the way I wanted to end it. I can’t imagine how I’m feeling any different that any other junior hockey player or any hockey player at the moment.”

Petruic said he was proud of what he's done this season and he couldn't have done it without his teammates in his last year of junior.

“I kind of knew this year needed to be special, and I kind of knew I could be a player who could dominate in this league,” he said. “I just tried to do my best and show that. Hopefully teams that are recruiting me saw that same thing. Yeah it sucks (the season ended), but personally it was a good year and you can’t ask for anything more than that.”

Petruic said at this point he's not sure whether he'll try his hand at pro hockey or university hockey in the fall.
