Organizers are expecting over 700 young archers have across the province to compete at the National Archery in Schools Program provincial tournament at the Yara Centre on April 22 and 23.

The archers will compete in individual and team competitions in the elementary, middle and high school divisions. The elementary division is students in Grades 4 and 5, middle is Grades 6 to 8 and high school is Grades 9 to 12. Participants are registered to take part in the tournament through their schools.

They will be competing in target shooting as well as 3D shooting on the turf at the Yara Centre.

The annual tournament is part of the National Archery in Schools Program, which is part of the learning curriculum in schools. Director of Education for the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Doug Gibson said the program has been very popular across the province.

“We have roughly about 200 schools scattered across the province that participate in the program, whether just in school or they go to smaller tournaments,” he said.

Gibson said the event is open to the public free of charge and he encourages people to come out and check it out.

“If people were interested to come and see what it was all about, or if they had a child that was maybe kind of on the fence about joining a mass program in their school or in their community, just come out, come check it out,” he said.
