NDP Opposition leader Ryan Meili has announced Thursday that he will be stepping down as the MLA for Saskatoon Meewasin as of July 1.

Meili, a native of Moose Jaw, was first elected to the Saskatoon riding in 2017 and won a second term in 2020 in a close race.

He was named the leader of the Opposition NDP in 2018.

After the NDP lost a seat in the Athabasca byelection in February, Meili announced that he was resigning as the leader of the party, but would stay on as the interim leader until a new one could be chosen at the NDP convention in June. So far, the only two running for the leadership are Carla Beck and Kaitlyn Harvey.

A date has been set yet for the byelection to select Meili’s replacement in the Saskatoon Meewasin.
