It was a day for lasts as the Director of Riverside Mission, Scott Elger, moved onto a new position.

The mission is evolving and making some changes and the position of Director at the local kitchen and men's shelter is being dissolved in a way, and Elger was offered the chance to be pastor at First Baptist Church, so he decided to step away from Riverside.

In his new position, Elger said he gets to serve a really great group of people and face new and different challenges, he's looking forward to finding ways how First Baptist could serve the community. The church even wants Elger to find more ways that they can volunteer and help Riverside.

Over the six years, Elger has been Director, there have been many people who have come through their doors. What stands out to him is that two of those people had overcome their challenges and started working at the Mission. One of their stories has already been told.

"That's really rewarding when you have people come in and you see them deal with their situations and now they're working alongside [you]. They were a client and now they're a colleague and that's certainly very rewarding and very nice."

Every chance Elger got he thanked the community for their generous support but he said he's neglected to mention the clients. As Director, he learned more and more every day and continued to improve and that's thanks to the people who come through the door, and a lot of them have offered their friendship. They will be something he misses in his new position.

"Definitely the people. Definitely, the folks coming in and having somebody make your day with a positive comment. Having somebody who comes in, who's struggles are far greater than mine could ever be, and still, find something bright or cheerful to say or share."

Riverside Mission is about serving and working alongside people, and Elger said he has had an amazing staff to work with, an awesome group of volunteers, and great clients.

Elger hopes when people think of him they feel that they were respected, validated, loved, and cared for. He also quipped that he was never a quick learner and spent many years in a seminary, but in reality, the Mission ended up being his seminary.

"[Riverside] shaped me so much but I hope I was able to give something back."

Elger had his final day at the Mission on Friday with a come and go tea with friends and clients, and his last official day as Director at Saturday's Sets4Supper. On his final day, he left one final note for everyone.

"Always remember it's about the people. For our board, for anybody, it's about the people. Everybody involved, the staff, the volunteers, the clients, it's about people coming together and walking together and helping each other find a better way of life."
