Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan made homeownership a reality for two more families in Moose Jaw.

The building of a duplex at 1015 Ominica Street East began in 2020 and this past summer the keys were handed over to a pair of families.

“They are doing really well. We're very excited to wrap up that project. We still have a little bit of landscaping still to do in the spring, but the families are doing really well there,” said Habitat for Humanity CEO Denis Perrault.

Perrault added that the project did experience some delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as supply chain issues.

Because there were no partner obligations to have a public ceremony to hand over the keys, it was done in a private ceremony.

The call was put out last year for applications for the duplex. The chosen families must complete 500 hours of volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity as well as training on how to become a homeowner and a financial literacy course.

Once those are completed, the duplex was offered to the successful applicants for a zero down, zero per cent interest mortgage that is paid to Habitat for Humanity. Perrault said there are currently 200 families across Saskatchewan that are paying mortgages for Habitat for Humanity homes.

As for the next project to take place in Moose Jaw, there are currently no builds planned for the Notorious City.

“We wrapped up our projects for the 2022 build season and we are looking forward to 2023. We will be releasing a provincial build plan likely in Q2 of 2023,” Perrault said.

Habitat for Humanity is currently going through some restructuring. In February of last year, the Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Regina chapters merged to become Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan. Moose Jaw was considered part of the Regina chapter.
