Time is running out to support the annual GoodBuy to Hunger Food Drive.
The event, which is held in partnership with the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train aims to stock the shelves at the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank to ensure no family goes without food on the table this holiday season.
Jason Moore is the program development manager for the Food Bank and he's noticing a greater need this year.
"As the cost of groceries rises, we are actually noticing a rise in the number of people that are using our services," Moore explained.
"Families who aren't able to afford as much as they could before are now relying on our food bank, and so it's really important that over the month of December that if you can give, please consider doing so."
Moore says through the month of November, the food bank assisted more than a thousand individuals, about a third of those people are kids. Heading into December, Moore said they've noticed a higher number of sign-up than originally expected.
In order to help as many families as possible, this year, the initiative expanded to a second location.
"We were always looking to grow our campaigns and we recently have amalgamated with Genesis Coop, which is located in Avonlea," said Michaela Turner, marketing and community relations manager for the Moose Jaw Coop.
"So, we are doing the Good Buy to Hunger campaign in Avonlea this year as well. The food bank is the district, which supports Avonlea, Rouleau, Wilcox and all the surrounding areas of Moose Jaw."
The event has been running for eight years, and organizers hope to make it another record year topping the 30,000 pounds of food donations raised last year.
"Our focus is to feed those in need and current times the need is greater than we've ever seen, so we have to all come together as a community and support our local food bank and the Moose Jaw Coop just makes it easy to do that," said CP Railway support services supervisor Gabi Belanger.
The food bags are being sold through December 16th for $10 each. The bags will then be delivered on your behalf ahead of the "Holiday Train at Home" concert with Steven Page, The Strumbellas and many others.
You can watch the concert live on December 18th at 7 p.m. local time on the CP Railway Facebook page.
