Eric Campbell and River Street Promotions have been named the Moose Jaw & District Chamber of Commerce 2022 Citizen of the Year and Group of the Year, respectively.

The event, held Tuesday afternoon at the Heritage Inn, was sponsored by Golden West Radio and CAE Inc.

Campbell is the principal at Lindale School. In 2022, he volunteered as head or assistant coach to eight different athletic teams, developed the Mavericks Fall Festival and the Campbell Female Hockey Camp, participated in the “Men’s Night Out of the Cold” event, and volunteered to care for a local rink. He is also a chartered member of the Association of Fine Gentlemen.

"Very honoured, very amazed at all the people that were here today and how I was lucky enough to be picked for it," he exclaimed. "There are so many amazing people in the room and there's just so many amazing people in Moose Jaw. I'm just really just thrilled that we get a chance to do great things and today was a really good recognition of that."

Campbell commented on his involvement in the community.

"For me it revolves around kids and it revolves around helping others. Things that we talk about at school and things we talk about in daily lives and I just try to do the best I can to demonstrate that, for not only my kids, but the people that I work with and my community as well."

The other nominees for Citizen of the Year included Darlene Geib, Jared Mathieson, Jody Oakes, Laurie Kosior, and Maguire Jackman.

"It is impressive to see the types of people that are committed to helping around this whole community and young or old or wherever you're from, it's that heartbeat, that commitment to helping and the willingness to be a good citizen," continued Campbell. "There's really young kids here that demonstrate that citizenship and what a wonderful thing that our community helps to create."

River Street Promotions connects audiences with inspired entertainers while raising funds to promote youth mental health wellness and education. Homestead ’22 was held in Ross Wells Ball Park with over 1,000 fans attending. Proceeds from the concert went towards youth mental health, and to the beautification of Ross Wells Ball Park.

"It's a surprise and an honour. It feels great," said River Street Promotions member Andy Hamilton. "To be nominated is an honour in itself amongst some great groups and individuals as well. Today to be selected was a surprise. Absolutely awesome. It's such a great group of people in our promotional group. We're doing good work and I think we're doing it for the right reasons to help youth in our communities."

River Street Promotions donated $85,000 in 2022 to support mental health initiatives at Prairie South School Division and Holy Trinity Catholic School Division. The funds were proceeds from the Homestand '22 concert event held this past September at Ross Wells Ball Park. A donation of $15,000 was also gifted to Ross Well Park for further beautification and improvements to the facility and field.

The 2021 concert raised $50,000 for the school divisions, in addition to $15,000 for the ballpark.

Hamilton explained how the funds are distributed.

"The way it's set up is we've partnered with the Prairie South School Division and the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division. Through our partners, we disseminate the funds to different schools who apply for grant money for projects that ultimately are to better youth health education and wellness throughout the schools. We lean on the organizers within the school divisions and the teachers to come to us with their ideas for projects and then we disseminate the funds through those applications."

Homestand '23 will take place Saturday, September 9 at Ross Wells Ball Park. The musical lineup will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Other groups nominated for 2022 included the U15 A Moose Jaw Warriors, Heartland Hospice Moose Jaw, Square One Community Inc. and The Moose Jaw & District Senior Citizens Association.

"What a great day, great event. I had some personal friends nominated for awards and it's just great to see people I don't know as well nominated for awards," added Hamilton. "We have such a special community here where people really take to heart the value of giving back to their community. It's exciting and it's encouraging to see these people and the contributions they make."
