Square One Community Inc. is another step closer to opening a warming/cooling centre and women's emergency shelter in Moose Jaw.

The location being looked at is the old fire hall, now known as William Milne Place, which is owned by Moose Jaw Non-Profit Housing Corporation.

One of the obstacles that was in the way was the fact that 13 per cent of the building was leased to the city, which was subleased to Global Direct Realty.

As City Manager Jim Puffalt explained at Monday's council meeting, the lease with Global Direct Realty has now been terminated.

"We formally cancelled the lease," he said. "It was fairly positive in that they had another location already by the time we met with them."

Global Direct Realty plans to vacate the premises by March 31, 2023.

Meanwhile, the Downtown Moose Jaw Association is scheduled to meet with Square One Community Inc. Thursday to discuss the project.

Square One will officially take over the lease on April 1, 2023.
