The Caribou Heights fastball diamonds will be named in honour of long-time coach and Moose Jaw Ladies Fastball Association founding member Eddy Moore.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department received a letter of request on Sept. 27, 2022, from the Moose Jaw Senior Ladies’ Fastball Association asking to have the Caribou Heights fastball diamonds renamed after Moore.

Along with being a coach and founding member of the ladies’ fastball association, Moore helped develop the ball diamonds at Caribou Heights and spent countless volunteer hours working on the diamonds. Moore passed away on April 20, 2022, at the age of 75.

The request was sent to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee to be reviewed. A sub-committee was struck on Sept. 27, 2022, to complete research and consultation on the request.

According to the city’s Municipal Naming Policy, the renaming of city-owned parks and facilities can be considered if there are no historic or legacy implications, it is not named after an individual or there are no existing sponsorship naming rights.

The findings of the subcommittee found that Moore made positive contributions to the diamonds for over 30 years and the diamonds are currently named after its geographical location.

The recommendation was put forward to city council on Monday to rename the park, which passed unanimously.

“Being that I was one of those fastball players that played alongside Coach Moore, he lived for that diamond and for those girls and for senior ladies' fastball,” said Coun. Dawn Luhning.

The Caribou Heights ball diamonds are comprised of two fastball diamonds that the city has a lease agreement with the Moose Jaw Senior Ladies Fastball Association for the maintenance and operation of the diamonds.

The city first entered into the lease agreement with the ladies’ fastball association in 1989 and both parties jointly built the second diamond in 1995.

The lease agreement was extended for an additional five years in 2020. The lease agreement expires on Dec. 31, 2025, with the Moose Jaw Senior Ladies Fastball Association having the first right of refusal for renewal.

The city noted that the renaming of the ball diamonds will not impact nearby Elk’s Field.
