Starting April 1, the federal carbon tax will start appearing on SaskPower and SaskEnergy bills.

A release from the Saskatchewan government, which is fighting the imposition of the tax in court, said the increase will be about $2 a month for power customers and $9 a month for natural gas.

"The federal government is imposing a carbon tax that will take more than $52 million this year and $546 million through 2022 from SaskPower customers,” said Dustin Duncan, minister reponsible for SaskPower.

“Our government is currently reviewing a request by SaskEnergy to reduce natural gas commodity rates to their lowest level in 20 years, effective April 1,” minister responsible for SaskEnergy Bronwyn Eyre said.

The amount of the tax is expected to increase annually with multi-year increases that are in the federal plan.

“These savings would be wiped out by the Federal Liberals’ carbon tax, resulting in higher natural gas bills for homes and businesses,” Eyre added.

Even as the case is in court, the tax will still be collected.
