Canada Day celebrations in Moose Jaw could be scaled back in 2023.

During Moose Jaw City Council’s budget deliberations on Tuesday night, Tourism Moose Jaw announced that they will no longer be hosting Canada Day festivities in Crescent Park.

Tourism Moose Jaw executive director Jacki L’Heureux Mason said they held a strategic planning session earlier this year and determined that the Canada Day festivities were not in their mandate.

Does this mean the Crescent Park festivities won’t happen? Not necessarily, L’Heureux Mason explains.

“It takes a lot of staffing during a time that's very busy for us and we're working really hard to find somebody to partner with to take over the daytime activities,” L’Heureux Mason.

She also pondered if the Crescent Park festivities are still needed as other activities have popped up in recent years across the city.

There have been past years where the Canada Day fireworks have been in question. L’Heureux Mason said they will continue to help with fireworks as long as there is a sponsor.

“We will, as just a personal interest, volunteer to make sure there are fireworks hopefully with the Kinsmen as well,” she said.

Tourism Moose Jaw did request $2,663 for the city’s 2023 budget to help cover insurance costs for the fireworks.
