City Council has approved the new automated garbage collection system that will see both front street and rear lane collection in Moose Jaw next year.

Concerns have been considered, changes have been made, and City Hall is going ahead with the automated garbage collection system for Moose Jaw...with a start up date of one year from now.

Council has approved the purchase 4 new trucks worth a million dollars total, about 10,000 garbage containers for 765 thousand dollars, with another 105 thousand dollars in start up fees.

In the end, City Engineer Ryan Johnson says this will save money. "Due to the efficiency increase of having the automated collection system we can pick up the garbage fast with less equipment and less people. Now some of the savings are off set by additional costs because of tree trimming and additional recycling on South Hill... but at the end of the day there should be about 60 thousand dollars a year savings."

About 800 homes will still have refuse collected manually because the new trucks won't fit down the rear lanes along the avenues on North Hill.
