The ground was officially broken for the new Assiniboia recreation complex during a ceremony on Monday morning.

The new complex will be situated north of the Prince of Wales Cultural & Recreation Centre.

The project is expected to cost $15.7 million with $11.5 million coming from federal and provincial funding, while the Assiniboia Civic Improvement Association raised the additional $4.2 million through fundraisers such as the Spring Fever Lottery.

The new two-storey 3,900 square-foot complex will have a rink, walking track, teen centre and a pickleball court-sized gymnasium.

Outside, the rink will have a large video, which the town is hoping to use for tailgate parties in 2022 as well as viewing parties for Saskatchewan Roughrider games.

The facility is expected to be completed by the summer of 2022 and fully operational by the fall of 2022.
