Statistics Canada has released its July Farm Survey of crop production

Total wheat production is expected to reach 30.5 million tonnes in  up 10.5% compared with last year.

If we hit that mark it will only be the second time in 25 years that Canadian wheat production will exceed 30 million tonnes, the last time was that bumper crop in 2013.

According to the report farmers in Saskatchewan anticipate production to rise 5.1% to 13.7 million tonnes with a 5 bushel increase in average yield to 42.2 bushels per acre.

Canola production in Saskatchewan is expected to edge up 0.8% from 2015 to 8.9 million tonnes in 2016. This is largely due to a 1.2% increase in harvested area, with average yield similar to the 36.3 bushels per acre in 2015.  Overall Canadian Canola production for 2016 is expected to reach 17 million tonnes.

Lentil production is expected to reach a record high in 2016. The rise in lentil production is the result of a 36.9% increase in harvest area to 5.4 million acres.

The majority of lentil production takes place right here in Saskatchewan, and farmers are projecting 2.8 million tonnes for 2016.

The average yield was reported at 1,283 pounds per acre, down 4.2% from 2015.

A significant amounts of rain fell in much of the province, which influenced yield expectations.
