Ag in Motion is giving farmers a chance to check out some of the new Seed Varieties hitting the market in the next few years.

Seed companies have variety plots at the site near Langham so producers can see the crop in production and compare what’s coming through the system.

Todd Hyra is the Western Canada Business Manager with SeCan and says there are a number  of strong varieties for Durum growers adding this year they launched AAC Raymore.

"For solid-stemmed durum to provide sawfly protection - it's very solid. For 2016, we'll be launching the first ever midge-tolerant variety," said Hyra. "So it's got a little bit of insect tolerance to midg but to sawfly - and there's a lot of interest headed into 2016."

AAC Raymore was developed in the Durum Breed Program at Agriculture and Agri-food Canada’s SPARC station in Swift Current.

"For 2017, we have a variety called Spitfire, which will be new out that year. It's a conventional durum, not insect tolerance traits with it but it  offers and 8% over Strongfield - so great progress there. And then the follow-up year to that is AAC Cabri, and that is another solid-stemmed durum that offers the solid-stemmed trait like Raymore but an 8% yield bump," he said.

SeCan demonstrated some of their new seed varieties plots this week  as part of Western Canada’s Outdoor Farm Expo – Ag In Motion.
