Saskatchewan is launching a challenge against the Province of Quebec, on the behalf of oilseed producers

The challenge is relating to Quebec’s policies on the sale of certain margarines, coffee whiteners and dessert toppings, which the province believes infringes on market opportunities for western oilseed producers and processors.

Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart says the Quebec market represents new growth opportunities for our Saskatchewan products and we will stand up for our producers and processors to ensure they are not discriminated against by unfair trade rules.

A dispute resolution panel formed under the pan-Canadian Agreement on Internal Trade is to hear the case January 8th with a ruling expected by the end of March.

The Minister responsible for Trade Tim McMillan says Saskatchewan believes in free trade, and our government is committed to knocking down barriers that harm our farmers.e Saskatchewan-led challenge is supported by the governments of Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.
