Imagine trying to perform the simplest of daily tasks, but being constantly bombarded with disorientating sounds and flashing lights.

For many people who are affected by autism or frequent migraines, this is a reality they face whenever they go shopping. So Sobeys stores across the country, including Regina, are implementing Sensory Friendly shopping nights where the lights are dimmed and check out noises are turned off.

Katie Statler is the Community Coordinator with Moose Jaw Families for Change and says this is an important step to greater inclusivity within the community.

"If there's a lot of people in the space at a time with lots of loud noises, voices, babies crying, things like that. Even the lights and the environment itself. So to be able to modify that environment for the people who have those challenges, I think that's really great."

Statler hopes these kinds of sensory-sensitive hours can be implemented here in Moose Jaw as well.

"As advocates for people of varying abilities, Moose Jaw Families for Change is always willing to help out or advocate for other businesses who are wanting to make those changes. It would be great to see that here, most definitely."

Sobeys' sensory-friendly shopping hours are from 6 - 8 every Thursday at the Albert St. Location in Regina.
