It would have been difficult for the Vanier Spirits to have played more stress-filled volleyball over the weekend at provincials.

It also would have been difficult for them to perform better, as the Spirits won all seven games they played in claiming the girls provincial 4A crown at Fort Qu’Appelle. The Spirits girls volleyball team came together well as a team to win provincials.

Senior Paige Beausoliel and the rest of the team had to find the energy match after match after playing 19 high pressure sets of volleyball in less than 36 hours.

“We were making sure to eat and drink a lot of sugary things, as well as some energy food,” Beausoliel said. “And then when we get out there, the adrenaline of wanting something so badly really kicked in and we were able to show them what we really were.”

Beausoliel showed leadership in helping her team overcome the loss in cities and re-channelling that into a winning trip to provincials.

“We used all the errors we made in city finals, and we took that into great consideration for provincials, and that’s what we were focusing on the entire time,” Beausoleil said. “We struggled very much on our passing and our serving in the city final, and we made sure that that was our most consistent thing throughout the whole weekend. And obviously, just that rivalry against Peacock, we wanted to come back and show them what we really had, I don’t think we played our best in the city final.”

The were able to get revenge on Peacock’s wins at regionals and the city final into a win over Peacock at provincials in the round robin.

Spirits coach Brad Hennenfent was impressed by Beausoliel's leadership.

“There were a couple of matches where she was able to put the team on her back,” Hennenfent said. “It was amazing.”

The school had an assembly Monday morning to celebrate the team.

Peacock finished third and earned the bronze medal.
