The federal Agriculture Minister says livestock and poultry producers need not worry about seeing significant increases in their costs due the newly-announced traceability program. The Government of Canada has announced the implementation of a comprehensive traceability system to be mandatory by 2011. Gerry Ritz says farmers will have to bear some of the cost but says the investment will pay off tenfold as our products reach new markets. Producers will be asked to pay an extra 60 cents for an animal tag containing microchip technology. Tags are currently worth between three and four dollars. Ritz says full traceability is necessary for maintaining and reaching new international markets. Canada used to be the leader in the area of traceability until Australia and Argentina passed us. The Americans are also looking at implementing a national system in the near future. |
