A high-profile child abandonment case is now complete. 22 year old April Halkett was charged
after she left her newborn baby in a Prince Albert Wal-mart washroom in 2007.
During her trial, Halkett testified she never knew she was
pregnant and began to panic when the baby appeared in the toilet.
She said the boy was blue and was not moving, therefore she thought
she was leaving a dead baby behind when she left the store.
Store customers and staff found the
child and managed to save its life. While Halkett may have thought the
child was dead, the Crown argued she still had a responsibility to
check and seek the proper help. The defence argued that what Halkett
did was morally wrong, but wasn't criminal.
It's believed the baby will be returned
to its mother in the near future but nothing has been confirmed. Halkett visits the baby regularly, has had a baby since the incident and is expecting another child.
