14 years of "waste" could come to an end
in Ottawa. Our federal politicians will have a
debate Wednesday on the national long gun registry and whether or not
it should be scrapped. A move put forward by Saskatchewan MP Garry
Breitkreuz.
Not only is the debate being watched
closely by hunters and sport shooters, Kevin Gaudet and the Canadian
Taxpayers Federation are paying attention to what happens. "When governments run programs,
ideally they run them effectively and in a cost efficient manner and
this is a clear case of a program that hasn't been run well and we
argue that it should even exist. Its a violation of property rights
and infringes on the rights of law abiding hunters and sport
shooters. Meanwhile they managed to waste no less than $2 billion."
That $2 billion was originally supposed
to be $2 million according to the Liberal government that created the
registry in 1995, but costs quickly got out of control. This is not to be confused with the
hand gun registry, the move will simply affect long guns used for
hunting and target shooting.
