Fewer Farm Fatalities

The news is good, for the most part. Experts say the number of people who die or are injured on Canadian farms continues to drop. Don Voaklander with the Centre for Injury Control and Research says the number of farm fatalities in Canada has been dropping for the last 16 years. Voaklander attributes much of the overall decline in incidents to improvements in farm equipment safeguards.

It's not all good, though. The number of fatalities annually in the over-60 age group is not dropping. He says this is likely due to the fact our farm population is older than ever before. He also points to the medication use and deterioration in sensory perception that comes with age.
