The Moose Jaw Cardinals stretch before practice as they prepare for provincials

The Moose Jaw Midget AAA Cardinals are off to Saskatoon this weekend to fight for a provincial championship.

The Cardinals finished 10th in the Prairie Midget Baseball League with a 7-14 record and are going in as underdogs, but coach Roger Anholt says in a weekend tournament, regular season numbers get tossed out the window.

"The teams around the province know our personality and know our personnel can do.  They are aware of the two guys we get back (pitcher Tanner Spencer & first baseman Ben Douglas).  I really think we're going go up their and have good weekend, that doesn't mean we're going to win it, but I feel good about our chances," said Anholt

The Cardinals bolstered their roster with the additions of Tanner Spencer and Ben Douglas, who've both played limited time this summer.  Spencer has been back and forth between the Cardinals and Baseball Canada's under 18 National Junior team.

Douglas joined the team late after completing his first season at the Vauxhaul Academy in Alberta, and has spent time with the Card and the Moose Jaw Miller Express.  In 11 games with the Millers, Douglas is hitting an impressive .421.

Anholt says if the team is going to be successful, they're going to need efforts from everyone.

"All season long we've had guys that have done really well.  Having said that, some of those same guys have gone through periods of time where they've struggled.  That happens to everybody, but let's hope but now it's the good times of the year and we put forth the kind of effort that I know alot of them have done and put in during the course of the year," said Anholt.

The Cardinals open provincials with round robin play against the Southeast Royals and Regina Mets on Friday.
