The Moose Jaw Police Service is about to introduce its new recruits. Two new police dogs just completing their 16 weeks of training will begin work next week. Police Chief Dale Larsen believes the dogs give them an advantage they've never had before.

"They're trained for tracking in missing person situations, they're also trained for drug detection, building searches and just a multitude of other things."

Costs associated with bringing in the new dogs come close to $100,000 -- but that's a one-time cost that includes training.

"A large portion of the upstart costs was a vehicle for the dogs that has to be equipped with shut-offs for air-conditioning and heating in the back so when the vehicles are left running those systems stay in. They also have alarm systems in case the system does shutdown."

Larsen says maintenance costs aren't very much as they matched up the dogs with existing officers.
