Since former Conservative Party Leader Erin O'Toole was voted out of his leadership, there’s been a couple of major announcements for the party.

As of late, Candice Bergen has stepped in as Interim Leader until a vote for a new official leader can be held.

The first conservative MP to announce they’re running for leader of the party was Pierre Poilievre. He was born in Calgary and now is a six-term MP for Carleton, as well as the Conservative Shadow Minister of Finance.

As of right now, Poilievre is the only one in the race for the conservative leadership; and he has local MP Fraser Tolmie’s full support.

“Over the past several days, weeks, and months, I have been listening closely to constituents about their thoughts on our leadership and the upcoming leadership race,” Tolmie said in a video he released on his Facebook. “After much consideration and many conversations, I am pleased to announce that I will be supporting my fellow colleague, Pierre Poilievre.”

Tolmie states that he considers Poilievre a friend and he strongly believes that Poilievre is the next best leader for the Conservative Party.

“He is principled and he has integrity. He has unmatched parliamentary experience and expertise, and I am confident he has what it takes to build a team who is ready to serve this great nation. He is already fighting for the interests of Canadians,” says Tolmie.

Some key reasons for Tolmie’s endorsement are that he believes that Poilievre will be able to convey a clear message to all Canadians since he is bilingual. He also says Poilievre understands the culture and needs of western Canada.

“Pierre was born in Calgary, has deep family ties to Saskatchewan, and understands the West. At the same time, he has been elected seven times in a row representing a riding in Southern Ontario. Pierre is also fluent in French giving him a strong advantage when communicating our positive vision for Canada’s future to new voters in Quebec and other French-speaking regions in our country.”

Tolmie also shared a story between him and Poilievre in his endorsement video about how Poilievre was the first person to call Tolmie after he won his nomination in his conservative riding. Tolmie stated that Poilievre's gesture meant a lot to him.
