With spring now five days old, some may be dusting off those golf clubs and getting ready for what this season has to offer.

Golf courses are doing the same thing as they are gearing up for what should be another great year for the sport.

Ray Wareham, the general manager for the Lynbrook Golf Club is excited about the upcoming season but is waiting for Mother Nature to cooperate.

“We’re in here getting the building ready to go and there have been some people coming up to start purchasing their memberships,” says Wareham. “There is some excitement but now we just need some cooperation from the weather.”

That is the one downfall of golf being an outdoor sport and especially in Canada is relying on the weather to be able to open.

“Two summers ago, we had the range open on April 1st, and they were out on temporary greens golfing on April 4th. Last year, was a little bit of a later start, we didn’t get going until the end of April. Hopefully, we can get out there as soon as possible.”

Their target opening date, like every year, is Apr. 15, but with the current weather conditions and the amount of snow on the ground, that date may have to be pushed back.

Wareham is hopeful that at the beginning of April, they can open the driving range to at least get people to the course, and then later in the month open up the temporary greens.

Though the opening date may be later than expected Wareham notes people have been eager to purchase their 2023 membership.

“We have had an increase in the past two years and we’re hoping to continue to climb upwards. Our junior membership has increased and we’re hoping to continue with that and get some new blood out here to enjoy the course.”

One new feature that users will notice this spring is that they have extended Hole #12 into a Par 5. The plan was to have it operational last season but wasn't able to.

“That will be one new adventure for the golfers here this year.”

Lynbrook is in the process of hiring staff for the restaurant, which they hope to be open by April 15, whether the course is open or not.

In addition, several new and returning golf tournaments will hit the links this spring and summer at Lynbrook.

Those that are interested in booking their tournament can do by calling the Pro-Shop at 306-692-2828 or emailing Wareham at proshop-gm@lynbrookgolf.org
